Detailed Overview

Under the direction of the Manager, Clinical Services, the Recreation Therapist is responsible for the development, administration and evaluation of recreation and social programs to meet the physical, social, emotional, cognitive and spiritual needs of the clients in the Extended Care Unit, Discharge Planning Unit and Adult Day Care programs.  This position also supervises recreation programmers.

Responsibilities

  1. Utilizing the philosophy and vision of the facility to plan, promote, organize, implement, and evaluate a wide range of recreation and social programs designed to meet the needs of the clients.
  2. Conducts leisure assessments for new clients and reassesses appropriate programs.
  3. Organizes and directs programs ensuring space requirements, supply requirements and program staffing requirements.  Heads programs as appropriate.
  4. Provides direction to recreation programmers, students and volunteers.
  5. Maintains and orders recreation suppplies for approval by the Department Manager.
  6. Participates in committee work as required.
  7. Assists with staff/family/volunteer and client education as required.
  8. Assists the program manager in the hiring and evaluation of staff.  Also responsible for the superviison of recreation programmers.
  9. Provides feedback to the Coordinator of Resident Support Services on the performance of volunteers.
  10. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelor's Degree in Recreation Therapy. Three years' related experience in Geriatrics. Eligible for membership in the B.C. Therapeutic Recreation Association. Current standard First Aide and CPR Basic Rescuer Certificate.
