Under the direction of the Program Coordinator, and as a member of a multi-disciplinary program, assists in the planning, organizing, implementing, documenting, supervising and evaluating a therapeutic recreation program designed to meet the individual needs and abilities of youth and youth transitioning to young adults identified as requiring social and vocational rehabilitation, in an outreach capacity, in order to maintain and improve their level of physical, mental, and social functioning and better ready them for employment or further education.

1. Assists in connecting youth with community resources. 


2. Assesses, develops and implements individual and group treatment programs for youth referred by community resources. 


3. Participates in multi-disciplinary team conferences, discharge planning conferences, and other team meetings as requested.


4. Provides leisure education for youth with serious mental health issues in the community.


5. Facilitates integration into the community, working towards an independent leisure lifestyle.


6. Directs the activities of volunteers as required by the program.


7. Provides input into the evaluation of volunteers who participate in the program.


8. Initiates and maintains a community resource network.


9. Acts as a resource person for the community regarding the recreation therapy needs for the youth. 


10. Maintains client records, statistical data, assessment reports and other relevant documentation according to the policies of the program.


11. Participates in research as required.


12. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education and Experience

Baccalaureate degree in Recreation Therapy from an accredited university. Two (2) years of postgraduate experience in Recreation Therapy with adolescents with mental health/psychiatric difficulties. Must be eligible for membership with the British Columbia Recreation Association.

Skills and Abilities

• Knowledge of adolescent developmental issues.


• Demonstrated skills in working with adolescents.


• Ability to maintain current knowledge of developments in Recreation Therapy through literature review, educational programs and involvement in professional groups.


• Ability to function effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary team.


• Ability to deal effectively with others.


• Ability to accept and exercise responsibility and perform the duties of the job.


• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.


• Physical ability to carry out the duties compatible with the requirements of the position.


• Valid BC Driver''s Licence and own motor vehicle required.


• Class IV BC Driver's Licence required.
