Detailed Overview

Within the context of a client and family centred model of care, and in accordance with the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of Providence Health Care, the person promotes a safe, respectful, and civil working environment for patients, residents, families, visitors and staff.


Reporting to the Assistant Chief Engineer, the position performs skilled plumbing work at the journeyman level such as installing and repairing pipe and plumbing systems and carrying out the plumbing preventative maintenance program for St. Paul's Hospital by methods such as inspecting piping systems and other plumbing fixtures. Performs preventative maintenance on steam and heating systems by methods such as repairing, replacing or installing equipment and/or parts, extends steam piping systems, joins pipes by threading, soldering and cementing and tests equipment for leaks and pressure levels as required. Installs, tests, maintains and repairs medical gas lines, compressed air, natural gas lines and controlled air systems and inspects and tests a variety of cross connection control devices. Ensures compliance with various codes and regulations related to the plumbing code and/or safety policies and procedures.

Responsibilities


  1. Reviews work requests and consults with user departments regarding specifications and other project requirements. Interprets blueprints, drawings and specifications in order to determine the materials and equipment required. Calculates materials and labour in estimating cost of projects and makes recommendations as required.

  2. Carries out the plumbing preventative maintenance program by performing duties such as inspecting piping systems and other plumbing fixtures for adjustments, repairs and maintenance needs, bolting, soldering, caulking, cutting, threading and assembling and ensuring for conformance to applicable codes and regulations.

  3. Installs and repairs pipe and plumbing systems by methods such as bolting, soldering and caulking.

  4. Performs preventative maintenance on steam and heating systems by performing duties such as maintaining, repairing, replacing or installing equipment and/or parts such as pumps, fans, air compressors, heaters, valves, bearing and seals. Extends steam piping systems including components of the physical plant such as expansion joints, valves, steam plants, strainers, heat exchangers, gauges and insulation by methods such as fabricating components, parts and pipe assemblies by measuring, cutting, threading and bending to the required sizes and shapes. Joins pipes by threading, soldering and cementing and tests equipment for leaks and pressure levels as required.

  5. Installs, tests, maintains and repairs medical gas lines, compressed air, natural gas lines and controlled air systems by methods such as bolting, soldering, caulking, cutting, threading and assembling in accordance with the British Columbia Gas Safety Code.

  6. Inspects and tests a variety of cross connection control devices such as reduced pressure backflow assemblies, double check valve assemblies and pressure vacuum breaker assemblies utilizing equipment such as dead weight testers, water columns, mercury manometers and differential gauges. Ensures that equipment repairs conform to the codes and regulations.

  7. Maintains an inventory of supplies, equipment and tools, completes related reports and records of repair and maintenance performed and forwards to Leader as required.

  8. Ensures compliance with various codes and regulations applying to the plumbing code and/or safety policies and procedures by methods such as providing direction in relation to plant safety to persons working within the power plant, maintains work area in accordance with established safety standards and guidelines and reporting operating inefficiencies, breakdowns and safety hazards to designate as required.

  9. Maintains records and makes log book entries and carries out tests and calculations.

  10. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Certificate of apprenticeship of Trades Qualification Certificate as a journeyman Plumber recognized by the Province of BC plus two years' recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Class B level Gas Fitter's License recognized by the Province of BC; and Certificate of Competency as a Cross Connection Control Specialist issued by the American Water Works Association, British Columbia Section.
