Detailed Overview

Supporting the Vision, Values, Purpose and Commitments of Fraser Health including service delivery that is centered around patients/clients/residents and families:

The Clinical Ethicist works collaboratively as a member of a small team to build capacity, promote and advance ethical decision-making, and provide clinical ethics consultation services and ethics analysis across the health care continuum within the Fraser Health region. Works in close collaboration with stakeholders to develop a strong network of partnerships within the organization and beyond.

Responsibilities

  1. Provides clinical ethics consultation and analysis to internal staff regarding challenging questions of clinical practice.
  2. Leads the education, training, and coaching on the process of ethics consultation, ethical decision-making, and the development of ethics resources within a team, unit, program, institution, or community in order to build capacity and advance ethical decision-making.
  3. Collaborates with the Senior Leader to provide regional leadership and guidance to clinicians, managers, and directors to ensure that Fraser Health is a leader in the provision of clinical ethics services.
  4. Collaborates with the Senior Leader to develop and implement the vision and strategic plan for the department.
  5. Implements and refines clinical ethics evaluation processes and analysis, in collaboration with the Senior Leader and Ethicist, Education and Research.
  6. Builds and supports ethics resource teams across the region to provide clinical ethics consultation services, in collaboration with the Senior Leader and Ethicist, Education and Research.
  7. Collaborates with the Senior Leader and Ethicist, Education and Research in the establishment of a Fellowship Program.
  8. Supports the System Level Ethicist regarding system-level ethics consultation as required.
  9. Coordinates and manages the annual ethics conference by overseeing the programming and execution of the conference, and facilitating involvement by other FH departments.
  10. Supports the Ethicist, Education and Research by guiding the process and administrative management of the FH annual intensive bioethics training program.
  11. Collaborates with various practice councils to integrate ethics decision tools throughout various disciplines.
  12. Represents FH and Ethics & Diversity Services at various events including educational forums, professional associations, regulatory bodies, and external committees, as required.
  13. Responds to requests for information regarding resources available to help support ethical practice including ethics resource people, teams and committees, books, videos, and other literature, professional codes of ethics, and other related materials and current thinking on bioethics issues.
  14. Undertakes literature searches in bioethics, public policy, and other health related databases.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Masters in Bioethics or related discipline (PhD an asset), and a minimum five (5) years experience providing clinical ethics consultation in a complex health care environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

  • Working knowledge of applicable legislation and regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
