Detailed Overview

Under the general direction of the Coordinator, Rehabilitation and Recovery, the Occupational Therapist provides specialized community-based occupational therapy services to adult mental health clients. Responsible for the provision of occupational therapy services, including assessment, planning and implementation of group and individual treatment for clients of the mental health centre. Provides consultation and education to client case managers/primary therapists, other program areas, and contracted agencies regarding rehabilitation. Develops rehabilitation services through development of partnerships in the community. Liaises with the Coordinator regarding rehabilitation services.

Responsibilities


  1. Provides occupational therapy services to clients by using recognized formal and informal assessments to provide occupational therapy assessment of mental health clients and identify client's disabilities and rehabilitation needs, program planning, interventions, discharge planning, follow up and program evaluation utilizing recognized occupational therapy techniques and practices.

  2. Develops rehabilitation plans including implementation strategies to meet the client's identified rehabilitation needs, working in collaboration with the client and the client's network.

  3. Provides occupational therapy treatment both individually and in groups to meet client's rehabilitation needs.

  4. Acts as a consultant/resource to the client case managers/primary therapists and community agencies in the provision of specialized rehabilitation services for referred clients by recommending client referral to appropriate community resources such as vocational services and semi-independent living program.

  5. Prepares written assessments/reports including recommendations to facilitate the client's success in their rehabilitation. Monitors and evaluates client outcomes. Reviews and modifies rehabilitation plans with the client/network as required.

  6. Conducts home assessments/community visits as required.

  7. Provides in-service instruction/training to staff related to the principles and process of rehabilitation with psychiatric clients.

  8. Develops and monitors rehabilitations services to meet rehabilitation needs of psychiatric clients by liaising with program areas and other community agencies and services to facilitate the integration of rehabilitation strategies.

  9. Strengthens existing partnerships and develops new partnerships to provide rehabilitation services; monitors and evaluates rehabilitation programs provided by contracted service providers, i.e. boarding home programs, peer support, club houses and Therapeutic Volunteer Program (TVP).

  10. Develops and implements psychosocial group programs for the mental health centre in collaboration with professionals from other disciplines.

  11. Monitors and manages Rehabilitation Fund for the mental health centre.

  12. Supervises occupational therapy students, as required.

  13. Assists with ongoing Rehabilitation Services development and maintenance/administrative functions by researching and/or developing assessment tools and protocols required for the provision of assessment services as part of the rehabilitation process.

  14. Represents service area at various committees and/or meetings.

  15. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Bachelors Degree in Occupational Therapy. Current full registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC). Eligible for membership in the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) or the British Columbia Society of Occupational Therapists (BCSOT). One (1) year's recent, related experience in a psychiatric setting.

Skills and Abilities


  • Ability to work independently and within an interdisciplinary team setting.

  • Extensive knowledge of rehabilitation practices in psychiatry, particularly in regard to people with serious and persistent mental illness.

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to deal with others effectively.

  • Physical ability to carry out the responsibilities of the position.

  • Ability to operate related equipment.
